San Marino is a heterogeneous economic system with about 5,000 economic operators, out of which over 2,600 are companies. Manufacturing represents the leading sector both in terms of employment (39.4%) and in terms of contribution to GDP (34.77% in 2018). Services contribute 24% to GDP and employ 21.8% of workers.

Trade employs 16.9% of workers and contributes 12.41% to GDP. Followed by financial-insurance activities and construction that account for 5.4% and 4.2% of GDP respectively. No less important is the housing and catering sector which employs 6.3% of workers. San Marino welcomes about 2 million visitors a year, mainly from Germany, the Netherlands, the United States, Great Britain and France, as well as Italy. GDP figures show an increase of 1.72% for 2018 (nominal GDP in million Euros 1,401.7), compared to 0.6% in 2017.

The positive trend in employment continues, with the average annual number of employees rising from 21,976 in 2017 to 22,466 in 2018. The unemployment rate continues to decrease, recording 6.24% in 2018 compared to the year 2017 which stood at 6.45%.
